Biography
In May of 1980, I earned my bachelor's degree in physics from Iona College, in New Rochelle, NY. I spent a year working at Memorial Sloan Kettering in the medical physics department. Under the supervision of Dr. Lowell Anderson and Dr. Basil Hilaris, I learned about computerized tomography of radioactive implants used to treat cancer, and calculating the dosimetry of these implants.
The decision to start a family was the start of my "at home" years. We quickly grew from 2, John and I, to 5 with the addition of Becky, John, Jr. and Kelly. As our family changed, so did our address! We moved 4 times before our oldest started school in Niagara, Wisconsin.
In September of 1997, I returned to school and in January of 2002 I earned my teaching certification in Broadfield science, physics and chemistry from the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay. Over the next 7 years, I added a certification in math and biology.
I currently teach High School science in Niagara, Wisconsin, where I live with my husband of 35 years, John. While teaching, it has become clear that keeping my students competitive with those graduating in larger schools means keeping abreast of the changes in technology available for use in the classroom. I try to take a class or engage in some sort of training at least once a year.
In the last 6 years, with the guidance and assistance of our media specialists, I have introduced the use of the Smartboard (r) interactive white board, as well as online Web 2.0 tools to my students. I have also found that allowing the students to use their smartphones to access internet data has been a great help. Those seemingly off task questions become quick research projects.
In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading, playing my flute, and teaching a bible study for the women at the church I attend.
